Hepatitis Ad

This semester I’m taking an independent study to learn about the programs Mudbox and Zbrush. There’s two projects total I have to work on, each in one program. Today I turned in my first assignment done in Mudbox. I decided to do cirrhosis to raise awareness on hepatitis b/c testing. I modeled the liver from a sphere in Mudbox as well as painted it and added the bumps (nodules) in Mudbox too. I then exported it to 3ds max and did a render composite in Photoshop.

In surgical illustration we had to create a black/white illustration of a surgical procedure for a medical audience. The surgery I saw was for dialysis patients where a vascular access is prepared in order to maximize the amount of blood cleansed during dialysis treatments. There are three kinds of vascular accesses, an arteriovenous fistula (AVF), an arteriovenous graft, and an venous catheter. The one I saw was the AVF which means that the vein was attached to the artery.

Higgs Boson

This semester I’m taking Advanced Graphic Design. For our first project we had to design a communication piece for Higgs Boson. Higgs Boson (also known as the “God Particle”) is the elementary particle in the Standard Model of particle physics. It was a major recent scientific discovery that is compared to the discovery of the electron that gave us electricity. There’s a lot of excitement around this discovery as it can lead to major scientific breakthroughs, however this discovery is majorly unknown to the public. My personal goal in this project was to create something that would attract the public and lead them to a place where they could learn more.

Independent Study

During the summer I met with the Director of Transdisciplinary Pathology at UIC Dr. Balla and Associate Professor Dr. Setty for a project intended to expand my knowledge of histology. We decided on a website that would be a tutorial on how to interpret renal biopsies. I created 25 diagrammatic illustrations done in Adobe Illustrator in the 12 weeks of summer. Here’s a sample.

Tom Jones

For our third assignment in illustration techniques we had to create a color reproduction of a black/white Tom Jones illustration. Tom Jones is the founder of the Biomedical Visualization program at UIC (the second medical illustration program in the country), helped establish the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) and was AMI’s first president. The illustration I chose was in one of my textbooks, an illustration of the hypogastric plexus. This was our first time working in color and I was surprised how much trouble it was to work in color. I’ll have to work out a better system. Done in Photoshop.

Tissue Sectioning

I know (with the exception of two assignments) I haven’t posted any of my work from this semester. So within the next couple days I will post everything. This is my second assignment from illustration techniques. Another digital line drawing but in illustrator now using the pen tool. We had to show a non-surgical procedure and as a histology lover I chose to show the sectioning process for light microscope tissue preparation.

So it’s getting into the sixth week of my second semester and I haven’t posted anything. We’ve mainly been working on exercises, it’s only been this past week that we’ve had assignments due. Thought I would post my first major project of the semester. This is a line rendered illustration drawn in photoshop. First time I’ve ever used a tablet.
